Red-hot field hockey team still undefeated at 7-0
By Jay TurnerIt was another easy win for the CHS field hockey team last week as the Bulldogs overcame a slow start to take care of Stoughton 3-0 at Memorial Field.
Senior captain Cady Kelly led the way, scoring two goals in the win to give her five over the past two weeks. Fellow senior Hailey Gaughan also netted a goal, and sophomore Kellie Stigas chipped in with an assist while playing an altogether “great game,” according to head coach Fior Griffin.
“Stoughton challenged us a bit in the first couple of minutes,” said Griffin, “but [Stigas] was one of the ones who stepped up early when we came out a little slow.”
Still, the Black Knights managed only three shots on goal as Canton surged ahead with another characteristically strong performance.
The Bulldogs, in fact, have been nothing short of remarkable through the first few weeks of the season, winning all seven games by a combined score of 30-1. The only goal they surrendered came in a 4-1 win over Mansfield, and since then the team has been statistically perfect, with shutout wins over North Attleboro (6-0), King Philip (3-0), Oliver Ames (3-0), and most recently, Stoughton.
In addition to players like Kelly and Gaughan, the team also boasts a dominant midfield line, featuring Holy Cross recruit Michelle McNeil and UNH-bound Emma Compagna. Canton also has a talented backfield led by senior captain Stephanie Rizzitano and junior center back Meghan McKenna, who already has four goals on the season.
“We’re very pleased with where we’re at right now,” acknowledged Griffin. “We’re happy to be undefeated.”
At the same time, Griffin cautioned that the schedule is about to get considerably tougher, beginning this afternoon with an undefeated Franklin team that has put up eerily similar stats thus far on both sides of the ball.
Canton also has a challenging stretch of nonleague opponents coming up, including games against Dedham on October 15 and Nipmuc Regional, a newcomer to the schedule, on October 17.
