Call it a tune-up before this week’s main event against Attleboro and Franklin, but the CHS boys’ soccer team looked nothing short of spectacular last week in consecutive 4-0 wins over Stoughton and nonleague Westport.

Led by senior captain Chris Murray, the Bulldogs put on a goal-scoring clinic against both teams, netting all eight goals in the first half while shutting down their opponents the rest of the way.

On Tuesday at Stoughton, Murray, Eric Wong, Scott Levy and Matt Malloy each scored a goal as Canton cruised to its fifth win in two weeks. Other top performers included Andrew Vinciguerra, Josh Klein, and goalkeeper Colby Gavigan, who now has six shutouts through the Bulldogs’ first nine games.

The most recent shutout, which came Saturday at home versus nonleague Westport, was actually a team effort as reserve goalkeeper Yanni Folkes got some run in the second half.

However, it was the offense that stole the show once again, beginning with senior Matt Kelly, who scored his first goal of the season to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Canton then added three more in quick succession, including two by Murray and one by Michael Denehy, giving both players a team-high six goals on the season.

As was the case on Tuesday, neither team managed a goal in the second half, although head coach Danny Erickson was pleased with the effort and was particularly encouraged by the play of freshmen midfielders Liam Collins, Bart O’Brien and Damian Kozak.

With the two wins last week, the Bulldogs improved to 6-0-3 overall and now lead second-place Oliver Ames by two full games in the Hockomock’s Davenport Division. The team is 6-0-1 over the past three weeks and has outscored opponents by a combined total of 25-2.

Hopefully, that momentum will carry over to this week, when the Bulldogs take on the top two teams in the Kelly-Rex Division, beginning with Attleboro on Monday and then continuing on Thursday at first-place Franklin.
