It was a high-scoring duel between the Attleboro Bombardiers and the Canton High Bulldogs, but the hosts had four costly turnovers as the Bombardiers cruised to a 42-27 win Thursday night at CHS.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-3 and ended a stretch of five consecutive games at home to open the season. Canton will now play four straight on the road, beginning at 2 p.m. this Saturday at Sharon (2-3).

Against Attleboro, the Bulldogs had their highest offensive output of the year, compiling 454 yards with no punts. Head coach Dave Bohane was so impressed with the performance of star running back Dexter Green that he nominated him for Boston Globe and Herald player of the week honors.

Green had 285 all-purpose yards, including 218 rushing yards, and chased down a runner on defense, stripped him of the ball and recovered the fumble.

“He had an incredible day for us, and he keeps getting better and better each week,” Bohane said. “He is some athlete.”

Ultimately, the four turnovers doomed the Bulldogs as they enabled Attleboro to cash in on its offensive opportunities.

Attleboro opened the game with a long drive, capped by Zach Swieger’s 13-yard touchdown run. Canton, however, came right back as Elias Camacho tied the score on a 27-yard run on the last play of the quarter.

In the second quarter, Green put Canton ahead with a three-yard scoring run. But Attleboro cut the deficit to one on a 20-yard pass to Malique Clark, who turned on the jets for a 75-yard touchdown to make it 14-13. Clark later scored on a 58-yard run, followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt to give the Bombardiers a 21-14 halftime lead.

Canton mounted a long drive at the start of the third quarter, capped by a three-yard run by Camacho to tie the game at 21. Attleboro then scored at the end of the third quarter on a 10-yard run by J.J. Jolaoso to give the Bombardiers a 28-21 edge going into the fourth.

Attleboro put the game out of reach with touchdown runs by Clark (11 yards) and Chris Walsh (10 yards), with Green scoring again from 19 yards out with 34 seconds left in the game.

Bohane also praised the effort of Camacho, who finished with 39 yards rushing, 37 yards receiving, a defensive sack, and excellent team leadership.

The defense was led by Conor O’Brien, who had a team-high six tackles. Joe Rudy added four tackles before going out with an injury. Other strong performances were turned in by Devin Costa, who blocked a kick and recovered a fumble, Ian Flavin and Logan Cerruti.

Although he felt his team played well against a talented team with a much bigger roster, Bohane said the “time for moral victories is over” and noted that the Bulldogs have to focus on errorless football.

“There is no doubt our offense is gaining more and more confidence,” he said. “We have to get past the fumbles, though, and execute better.”
