Reebok Canton Road Race
By Mike BergerMore than 500 participants turned out for the seventh annual Reebok Canton Road Race, held Saturday morning at its new home at Reebok World Headquarters on Royall Street. Traditionally, the race has started and finished on Washington Street in front of Canton High School.
This year’s race, hosted by the Canton Association of Business and Industry (CABI), raised more than $30,000 for various Canton organizations, including the Fire and Police departments, the Mass. Hospital School, and the Canton Food Pantry. Proceeds will also go toward scholarships for CHS and Blue Hills Regional students.
The winner of the 5K race was Patrick Joyce of Newton, a Reebok employee who regularly runs the course during his lunch break. He was a previous winner of the 5K Homecoming race and finished this year’s race in 18:13.
Krystal Douglas of Harpswell, Maine, was the first woman and third overall finisher in the 5K with a time of 18:37. She is trying out for the Olympic team and previously ran for Providence College.
Matt Meagher, 24, of Mansfield, won the 10K race in 34:28.
Several Canton residents also turned in strong performances, including Marc Priddy, who finished sixth in the 5K in 19:13, and CHS junior Lauren Berman, who finished 11th in 20:09. Other Canton runners who posted solid 5K times and finished among the leaders in their age group were Raymond Jackman (21:38), Elizabeth Turnbull (22:37), Brianne Cobb (23:29), Joe Febo (24:02), Kathy Dever (26:19), and in the 14 and under category, Sean McCarthy (29:09) and Olivia Stevens (33:16).
In the 10K, top Canton finishers included Andrew Kastanotis, who came in third with a time of 36:16; Drew Kemalian, sixth, 40:51; Mike McDonald, ninth, 41:29; Craig Chazan, 10th, 42:36; and Beth Allen, 11th and the first woman finisher, 42:52. Other notable runners from Canton included Stephen Shepard and Dan Breslin in the 50-59 age group, and Brad Lee in the 60-69 group.
Chris McGarry of Canton won the wheelchair race with a time of 47:20.
