Town readies for Independence Day festivities

By

For the first time since 2019, the town of Canton will celebrate Independence Day with its traditional slate of events — albeit a week earlier than usual due to scheduling challenges.

The festivities get underway this Sunday, June 26, at 9 a.m. with the Joe DeFelice Annual 5K Road Race — a Canton summertime tradition for more than 50 years. Previously known as the Canton July 4th Road Race, the event has been renamed in memory of race founder and ‘Man About Canton’ Joe DeFelice.

The race starts and finishes at the Canton Town Club at 300 Bailey Street and features a 5k for $10 per participant and a fun run for $5 per participant. Pre-register at cantonrec.com. Same-day registration is also available on site at 7:30 a.m.

Later that same evening, the Canton Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Irish Cultural Centre at 200 New Boston Drive. Enjoy inflatables, face painting and airbrush tattoos, a live concert featuring Classic Trax at 7 p.m. and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the ICC.
