Individual swimmers see improvement after break
By Jeffrey PicketteWith over two weeks since their last meet against North Attleboro on December 21, the CHS varsity girls’ and boys’ swim teams returned to action last Wednesday against Sharon.
Neither team won — the girls lost 88-74, while the boys fell 99-60 — but head coach Lori Mooney said that even though there is still room for improvement, the hard work put in during this 15-day hiatus between meets paid off in terms of individual achievements, as a number of swimmers saw significant drops in their times against Sharon.
“We’re not only seeing [improvement] in the drop of times, but we’re seeing [improvement] in their skill level,” Mooney said. “Their turns are better; their starts are better.”
The meet against Sharon took place at Randolph High, in a pool Mooney classified as “slow.” By comparison, Canton’s home pool, located at Blue Hills Regional, is more of a “fast pool.”
“We weren’t expecting to see as much of a drop in times,” she said, “but, yet we did.”
On the girls’ side, Abbey Willis shed six seconds off her time in the 100-yard butterfly, an event Mooney described as “grueling.”
Meanwhile, Emma McHugh improved her 500-yard freestyle time by five seconds; Allison McHugh (no relation to Emma) shed three seconds off her time in the 100-yard freestyle; Elena Kilduff improved her time in the 100-yard backstroke by three seconds; and Brianna Duserick improved her time in the 100-yard breaststroke by two seconds.
Newcomers Eric Newton, Scott Buresh and James Frazier all impressed on the boys’ side. Newton came in second in the 100-yard fly, just ahead of Buresh, who placed third. Frazier came in first in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Mooney also credited Mike Vartanian, Edouard El Massih and Jon Whittemore for turning in “outstanding performances.”
Heading into this week, the girls were 1-2, while the boys were 0-3. Both teams faced King Philip on Wednesday and both are set to take on Mansfield on Friday.
