CHS girls’ soccer trounces Sharon on Senior Night
By Jay TurnerWith rain forcing the cancellation of last Friday’s game at Foxboro, the unbeaten CHS girls’ soccer team had just one game last week, but it sure was impressive as the Bulldogs celebrated Senior Night with a 6-1 blowout win over the visiting Sharon Eagles.
The win was Canton’s tenth of the season and its second against the Eagles — a team that is “feisty” and competitive, according to head coach Paul Turner.
As a result, Turner was not surprised when Sharon scored the game’s first goal to take an early 1-0 lead. But the Bulldogs soon took total control of the match and went into halftime with a commanding 5-1 lead.
Altogether, the team scored six unanswered goals, including three in a span of seven minutes in the first half that effectively blew the game wide open. Four different players scored goals in the win, including two apiece by juniors Lauren Berman and Meghan Lennon. Seniors Kensey Waterman and Kayla Laughlin rounded out the scoring, and junior Brianna Duserick had another strong performance with two assists.
“Just collectively, as a group, once we settled down I thought we attacked brilliantly,” said Turner. “It seemed like every time we brought the ball forward we had a chance to score.”
“We don’t just have one or two [scoring] options,” he added. “Every time we come forward we have four or five options, and that, I think, is the sign of a dangerous team.”
The team has also benefitted from the strong leadership of its seven seniors, all of whom were honored prior to the game. And besides Tara Saraf, who is injured, each of the seniors played important roles in Tuesday’s win, including Meghan Barrera, Vicki Tondre, Stephanie Atocha and Zarina Brune.
Now 10-0-1, the Bulldogs were scheduled to play nonleague Silver Lake Regional last night and can potentially lock up the Davenport Division with a win tomorrow afternoon at home versus Oliver Ames. They then have three more games next week before wrapping up the regular season with a Hockomock League crossover game (TBA) on Sunday, October 30.
