Boys’ soccer tops Foxboro to stay unbeaten
By Jay TurnerAfter settling for another disappointing draw against Sharon last week, the Canton High boys’ soccer team bounced back with a crisp, 2-0 win over Foxboro Sunday night at home.
The Bulldogs, rated No. 2 in the Boston Globe’s Top 20 poll coming into the week, seemed to get a huge lift from the return of senior midfielder Matt Malloy, who had missed the previous few weeks due to injury.
Malloy’s presence alone gave the hosts some much-needed confidence as they went on to dominate possession in a well-played but scoreless first half. The Bulldogs then turned to junior sparkplug Matt Lennon, whose header in the box put them up 1-0 early in the second half.
A few minutes later, junior Jimmy Kelly added to the lead with a booming goal from about 25 yards out. “It was just a brilliant strike to the top left corner,” said head coach Danny Erickson of Kelly’s goal, his first of the season.
Meanwhile, the Bulldog defense stepped up, led by the back four of David Feeney, Andrew Vinciguerra, Matt Kelly and Jimmy Kelly, along with senior goalkeeper Colby Gavigan, who earned his ninth shutout of the season with another outstanding performance in net.
Gavigan, a team captain and a three-year starter, is having a “phenomenal” season, according to Erickson. He already owns several school records and currently leads the Hockomock League in every major goaltending category.
Not every shutout ends in a victory, however, and the Bulldogs were reminded of that last Tuesday as they finished in a scoreless tie with Sharon despite dominating the second half of play.
“We had a lot of things go well at times, but overall it was just a lackluster performance for us,” said Erickson, whose squad finished 0-0-2 against the Eagles this season.
Although thrilled to be unbeaten this late in the year, Erickson said the team’s five draws (8-0-5) have allowed second-place Oliver Ames to remain in the hunt for the Davenport Division title, and barring an unforeseen set of circumstances, tomorrow night’s game at OA could very well determine the regular season champion.
Canton was also scheduled to play an undefeated Silver Lake team this week and will close things out next week with a home game against Stoughton on October 25 and a Hockomock crossover match on October 29.
