Sharon became the first team to effectively contain Canton’s running back duo of Dexter Green and Elias Camacho as the Eagles won in a rout 28-13 at Sharon High Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs fell to 2-4 on the season and have now lost four in a row after jumping out to a 2-0 start. Canton will next take on Franklin, which is also 2-4, tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Franklin High.

In a battle of two evenly matched teams, Sharon began to take control in the first half and went into halftime with a 14-7 lead. Canton had a chance to tie up the game in the third quarter with a touchdown pass, but the pass was dropped on the run and the Bulldogs never regained momentum. Meanwhile, the Eagles went on to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while Canton added a late touchdown to round out the scoring.

The Bulldogs, who went into the game averaging over 21 points per contest, were effectively contained by the Eagle defensive line, which limited Camacho to 74 yards and Green to 73 yards.

Camacho opened the scoring in the game on Canton’s first possession when he took a pitch out from the Sharon 48-yard line, broke three tackles and scampered down the sideline for a touchdown with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter.

The Eagles came back to tie the game in the second quarter, taking advantage of a Canton fumble and two offside penalties. Quarterback Nathan Pedersen hit receiver Brad Kaufman from 22 yards out for the score.

Canton was unable to convert on fourth down on its next possession, and the Eagles seized the opportunity, capping a seven-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Caleb Piltch-Loeb.

The dropped Canton touchdown would have tied the game with 4:43 left in the third quarter. Instead, the Eagles blocked Canton’s punt attempt and took over at midfield. Four plays later, Sharon scored its third touchdown on a quarterback sneak by Piltch-Loeb, who also had a 42-yard run on the drive.

Canton did not score again until late in the fourth quarter, when Green finally broke loose on successive running plays, capped by an eight-yard touchdown run.

After the game, first-year Sharon coach Dave Morse credited his assistant coaches for a great defensive game plan and his defense for executing the plan.

“We prepared well,” he said. “We had an idea of what they were going to do and who they were going to. The defensive line played especially well. It was our most complete win and the best game we have played so far.”

“I give them a lot of credit,” said CHS head coach Dave Bohane. “They did a great job of containment and came up with a great game plan. We made mistakes, and they capitalized on them by making the big plays. They executed, we didn’t.”

The Bulldog defense was led by linebackers Conor O’Brien and Jakiel Moses-Harris, who both finished with eight tackles.

Canton now turns its attention to Franklin, which is coming off a big win over Westhill (CT). The Panthers’ other win came against nonleague Milford, and their four losses have come against Arlington Catholic, Oliver Ames, Foxboro, and North Attleboro.
