CC teams beat Stoughton in regular season finale
By Mike BergerBoth Canton High School cross country teams ended their regular season with a victory over rival Stoughton at home as the girls improved to 3-1 with a 26-31 win while the boys rebounded with a 20-41 win to finish 2-2.
For the boys’ team, senior Kevin O’Donnell was Canton’s best runner, finishing second overall with a time of 14:40 over a 2.5-mile course. Canton then captured 10 of the next 11 positions with the seniors in particular having a great day. Jake Fruci finished third in 14:51, followed by John Whittemore (14:54), Mike Vartanian (15:03) and Dave Rosenberg (15:08). Other top runners included Eric Newton (15:24), Kevin McNeil (15:26), Mike Rota (15:3), Joe Clancy (15:34), and Quinn Merrigan (15:35).
Head coach Chris Elgar noted that Vartanian has emerged as one of the team’s top five runners, while Rota and sophomore Peter Hartfiel are also much improved from last season.
For the girls’ team, the meet was a lot closer as Stoughton captured the first and second spots. However, Canton took five of the next six spots and all were underclassmen: junior Eleni Papadopoulos, third, 17:32; junior Kelsey Sayers, fourth, 17:38; sophomore Courtney Loughnane, fifth,18:01; junior Kate McClintock, sixth, 18:05; and sophomore Amanda Eagles, eighth, 18:11.
Seniors Michaela Nannery, Audrey Cilento, Isobel Heck, Mairead Bagley, Mary Korycansky, Deidre Simms, Nina Kalita, and Angela Sementelli all had great outings in their last race on the CHS home course.
Some of the girls will be running at the Twilight Invitational in Falmouth this weekend. Both teams are preparing for the league meet on October 29 at 9:30 a.m. at Borderland State Park in Easton.
