Girls soccer out-duels OA in key division clash

The CHS girls soccer team snapped a five-game winless skid with an important, 4-2 road victory Friday at division-leading Oliver Ames.
The Tigers still maintained control of the Davenport as of Monday with a record of 11-3-1 while the Bulldogs remained in second place at 8-3-3. The team had three games remaining this week, culminating with the regular season finale this Saturday, October 29, against Medfield at 4:30 p.m.
Canton came into Friday’s game on a bit of a cold streak with three ties and two losses over its previous five. OA promptly went ahead 1-0 just minutes into the contest, but Mekhala Costello equalized with an unassisted goal. The team would tie it up again at 2-2 with a goal by Paige Sullivan, assisted by Emma Cahill, then Emily McCabe scored what turned out to be the game-winner after she drew a foul in the penalty area and converted from the spot. McCabe would later seal the win off an assist by Sarah Dempster.
Head coach Idris Senyonjo is hoping the victory can give his team some momentum to finish the regular season. “After not winning a game in five matches I am proud of the team’s performance on Friday,” he said. “It was a great performance all around in a game that was fast paced from start to finish. Obviously, we have been disappointed with our results lately as we all believed we deserved more from most of those games. We had a good practice session leading up to this game and you could see right away that the girls were up for the challenge.
“Hopefully this can push us on to finish the season on a high note after having fallen behind due to a stretch of frustrating games. All we can do is take it game by game as we try to finish the regular season strong”
Earlier in the week, Canton tied Stoughton 1-1, but it was a frustrating result as the Bulldogs dominated from start to finish and “definitely deserved to win,” according to Senyonjo.
“Most of this game was played in the Stoughton half of the field and it was almost a déjà vu of the Sharon game,” he added. “We just couldn’t find that game-winning goal.”
Canton’s lone goal was scored by McCabe, assisted by Georgia Campbell. “We have gone through a bad patch of winless games,” Senyonjo said, “and we now know that our focus has got to be to try and finish the rest of the season on a high note by doing our best to get positive results.”
