Ofonagoro (3TDs) leads Bulldogs past Norwood
By Mike BergerThe Canton High football Bulldogs came through with their fifth win of the year on Friday, coming back from a 20-7 deficit on the road to win at nonleague Norwood 21-20.
Playing a non-playoff schedule, Canton (5-3) was pitted against the 2-7 Mustangs and will next host Dennis-Yarmouth (3-6) tomorrow afternoon before wrapping up the season on Thanksgiving Day against traditional rival Stoughton.
Against Norwood, Canton was without two-way starters Hayden Rose and Jack Digirolamo, but several players stepped up in their absences.
Senior running back Godson Ofonagoro had his best game of the season, tallying 153 yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead the comeback effort.
Senior Cole Ouellette played defensive end, intercepted a pass and made eight tackles, including six for a loss. Senior Josh Richards led the defense with 10 tackles while senior James Robbins was all over the field, playing multiple positions on offense and defense.
Canton struck first in the game, as Ouellette intercepted a pass at the Norwood 48-yard line. Runs by Ofonagoro, quarterback Owen Lane and Matt Hart set the offense up at the Norwood four-yard line, and Ofonagoro punched it in for the opening score.
Coming out of halftime with the game knotted at 7-7, the Mustangs would score two unanswered touchdowns to go up 20-7. But Canton soon got one back as Ofonagoro ran for 51 yards to the end zone to cut the deficit to 20-14.
The clinching touchdown came with three minutes to go in the game on a long sustained drive. The Bulldogs’ Derrick McCruse had a nice punt return to set up the offense at their own 48-yard line. Runs by Ofonagoro and Lane brought the Bulldogs to the Mustang one-yard line, and Ofonagoro finished off the drive with a one-yard plunge. An errant Norwood snap and a failed pass attempt on fourth and 32 gave the Bulldogs the ball back and they ran out the clock to seal the victory.
CHS head coach Anthony Fallon said the team showed a lot of character coming from behind on the road. The Bulldog defense only allowed 67 rushing yards Canton’s rushers gained 214 yards on the ground.
In other news, Fallon was recently selected as Coach of the Year by the Independent Officials of Massachusetts. The award signifies running a good program and fostering good sportsmanship.
