Former Canton High School field hockey standout Erin Lane took home some noteworthy hardware in her first collegiate season as she was named the winner of Westfield State University’s 12th Player Award as determined by the Little East Conference.

The prestigious honor is presented at the end of the season to one student-athlete from each team in the conference in recognition of their positive contributions to the team both on and off the field. The LEC annually looks for players who “bring forth their best effort in competition, practice and other team activities that positively contribute to the success of the program.”

The Canton native and first-year Owls midfielder saw action in 17 games for Westfield this fall and recorded her first collegiate point with an assist in a 4-0 victory at Bridgewater State.

While her stats were modest, Lane was the only freshman and one of only three Westfield State field hockey players to receive a conference award this season, along with Skyla Harthcock, a junior forward and All-LEC 2nd Team selection from Martha’s Vineyard, and Emily Martin, a junior midfielder and All-LEC 3rd Team honoree hailing from Southwick, MA.

Overall, the Owls finished their fall 2022 campaign with a 10-9 record and a 7-5 mark in the Little East Conference under head coach Jessica Bergen. Westfield earned the seventh seed in the conference tournament and lost a hard-fought first round game at Worcester State 3-2, ending their season on November 1.

A 2022 CHS graduate, Lane played four years of varsity field hockey in high school and was selected as a team captain in her senior year. Already an instrumental member of the team going into her final high school campaign, she would go on to have a career year as she led the Bulldogs to a 16-4 record while finishing second on the team in both goals (8) and assists (7). She was also one of the team’s go-to players on corners and free hits and emerged as one of their top playmakers and most vocal leaders.

In her first year at Westfield, Lane has already solidified her place as a key rotation player and will almost certainly take on added responsibilities next season for a team that is poised to contend for a postseason spot with only one senior slated to graduate.
